"The Great Sodium Disaster Of 1998." Ask.com. 12/1/09.

This article talks about an experiment that tested the reaction of sodium metal with water. Sodium will react with a lot of things, including the oxygen in atmosphere, so their experiment needed to be safe. Their plan was to lower a block of sodium metal into a PVC pipe which led into a container with about 4.0 L of water. They placed probes inside the container to record the data. The IV was the sodium metal and the DV was the reaction of the water mixed with the sodium metal. The results were, they said, disappointing because the force blew the bottom of the container off.

The experiment was quite interesting and I learnt many things about sodium and sodium metal. I don't think the experiment was a very good one and I don't know why I think that.I think it is partly because the article did not give enough information about the experiment or it's results.

  1. ask.com is not a current news article. You should have seen at start of article "in AP chemistry class" and seen that as a clue that it was posted by students. Check reputable news sources.
